Lechia Gdańsk youngster Jan Biegański has revealed he turned down the chance to join Arsenal as he didn’t want to ‘run into deep water’.

Biegański is set to join Gdańsk on January 1st, making the step up to Poland’s Ekstraklasa after several years with GKS Tychy in 1 Liga.

The move comes as something of an anti-climax, with the player having been linked with a much bigger step up in recent weeks.

Reports in Poland have stated that the 18-year-old defensive midfielder on the list of several big clubs in Europe, with Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool among a host of Premier League clubs thought to have him on their list.

Indeed, those same reports stated he had had the opportunity to test himself at those clubs, suggesting they had gone as far as offering him trials and were keen to sign him up.

He’s instead elected to make the move up a division, and explained the decision, as relayed by Sportowefakty.

“This is the right step in my life,” he said.

“I did not want to run into deep water, and I think that PKO Ekstraklasa at this age is the best result for a player from the 1st league.

“The training staff and the possibility of cooperation with both trainer Stokowiec and mental trainer, which I have always dreamed of, convinced me.

“The trainer introduced me to the plan and development opportunities.

“My next step is abroad, and I came to Gdańsk with this approach – to leave a good impression in PKO Ekstraklasa, and in a few years to conquer abroad.”

It now remains to be seen if Biegański can make a big impression with his new team and earn himself the move he’s clearly mapped out.

No doubt the likes of Arsenal will be keeping a close eye on his progress regardless as they look to secure the next big youngster to add to their ranks.
