As far as we’re aware, Estadio Deportivo’s mention of Arsenal’s interest in Sander Berge is the first of its kind.
In the past, the Norwegian defensive midfielder has been linked with Everton, who tried to sign him prior to his move to KRC Genk, while Liverpool joined in later, just before the January transfer window, without anything happening.
Also heavily linked with Sevilla, hence the article in the local media Estadio Deportivo, the 20-year-old could be at the centre of an interesting auction between the Gunners, Villarreal, Napoli and the Champions League quarter finalists this summer.
Arsenal are mentioned right at the bottom of the article, as Liverpool’s recent purchase of Fabinho should, for now, push the Berge dossier to one side, but Unai Emery’s late, and failed, attempt to sign the former Monaco midfielder could force him to turn to Berge instead.
Far less experienced and playing for a club who aren’t in a position to ask for €50m, the young Norway international is allegedly available for around €15m, which would represent an impressive €13m or so profit in just a year and a half for the Belgian side.
At that price, even the frugal Arsenal would find it hard to say no, and he’d certainly fill a gap in their squad.
Berge missed the last two thirds of the season with a groin injury, which Het Nieuwsblad originally reported would only keep him out for six weeks.
He’s now fit again and has been training with the Norway national team.
This certainly looks like it would be a Sven Mislintat pick.
