Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere reportedly got close to signing for AS Roma on transfer deadline day.

According to Italian newspaper Gazzetta Dello Sport, the 24-year-old gave the Italian side a positive response during the transfer negotiations, at least that was the case by ‘lunch time’.

However, Roma were not able to reach an agreement with Arsenal regarding the player’s salary during the loan. The Italian side wanted Arsenal to contribute more than they were happy about.

Given the difficulties of the negotiations, Wilshere has chosen to stay in England and signed a one-year loan at Bournemouth instead.

This may well be the Italian media giving a reason for Wilshere to Roma failing, rather than accepting he simply decided to stay in English football. A move to Roma always looked curious, seeing as the Italian club have an excellent selection of midfielders.
