While deadline day proved to be a good one for Arsenal with the arrival of Thomas Partey, it wasn’t all a massive success.
The Gunners had hoped to be moving players on, chiefly defender Sead Kolasinac, who has been deemed surplus to requirements by Mikel Arteta.
He had looked close to a move to Germany for much of the window, which would have been a significant success for Arsenal given the big wage packet the left-back currently earns.
Reports indicated that a deal was all set up and ready to go with Bayer Leverkusen but that never happened, with the deadline passing and Kolasinac remaining at the Emirates.
The situation seemed strange from the outside and Kicker have now explained what happened, or in this case, why nothing did.
They say that Leverkusen boss Peter Bosz had ‘wanted’ another left-back in his squad and hoped right up until the deadline that Kolasinac would arrive to fill that spot.
However, the final day of the window proved to be ‘sobering’ for everyone involved, with the Bundesliga side not getting anyone they wanted or needed.
Instead, the deal for Kolasinac was ‘cancelled’ because had he arrived, he would have been the 11th defender in their squad and Leverkusen’s leaders had no intention of adding the Arsenal man to the ‘traffic jam’ in that area of the team.
Thus, they ended up missing out on a player their manager very much wanted and Arsenal missed out on an exit that would have been beneficial.
