‘The most embarrassing transfer farce of the summer’.
That’s the headline Bild have on Tuesday as they look at what happened behind the scenes in the failed deal that was supposed to take Nadiem Amiri from Bayer Leverkusen to Leeds United.
The midfielder has been a target for Daniel Farke over the past week or so, and despite a lot of back and forth, agreements and denial, the transfer will not be going through.
Amiri himself even travelled to Leeds to hold personal talks with the Championship club, but that wasn’t enough to convince him to swap Germany for Yorkshire, and so everything is off.
Bild don’t hold back in their criticism of the player, recalling there have been three yeses and three noes from the player, wilfully giving Leeds fans hope only to then shatter their hearts on multiple occasions.
They point out that he flew to Leeds ‘on a private jet’, as the club were prepared to pay close to €6m for him, despite him already rejecting them twice.
It’s explained Amiri ‘looked at the city and the training ground’, alongside holding some talks, but instead of signing a four-year deal, ‘he backed out and flew home’.
And that’s why ‘every negative cliché that exists’ about young players who earn a lot of money at a young age can be placed on his back, with them using the magnificent trio of ‘arrogant, spoiled, unreliable’.
In fact, they believe that his wishy-washy attitude for this transfer won’t do him any favours back in Germany either, where Xabi Alonso now has to deal with him.
How can the Spaniard, who ‘demands maturity’ from his players, trust someone who ‘constantly changes his mind in pressure situations’?
The midfielder ‘does not play a role in Bayer’s plans’, and that’s why his decision to snub Leeds, where he would have likely started, is even more unbelievable, at least in Bild’s eyes.
With just a handful of days left to sort out his future, the German outlet now wonder whether another club will be ‘ready to get involved in the games’?
