Guido Rodríguez leaving West Ham United has been one of the more boring situations of the January window.
There’s not been a lack of interest in the midfielder, far from it. A multitude of clubs from various continents have come forward for the player, but whilst they’ve been interested none have appeared desperate to sign him.
The same has been true for Guido Rodríguez himself. He’s been interested in a number of approaches, yet taken a while to nail it down to what he wants. Reading between the lines, the South American has been tempted by a number of opportunities and not entirely convinced on his plans.
A week ago, the Hammers man gave his approval to joining Grêmio. The Brazilian club thought they had a deal sewn up. The West Ham player was expected to fly back to South America and go through the transfer process. On that transfer, the Premier League club would have received around €3m.
Then the pendulum swung back to Spain and Valencia. Now the 31-year-old is expected to arrive in Spain on Sunday, reports today’s edition of Marca.
West Ham likely glad it’s all sorted
Guido Rodríguez is terminating his contract with West Ham United, having dropped further down the pecking order under Nuno Espirito Santo. As far as Marca have it, it’s a contract termination and that means the Hammers won’t be getting a transfer fee. The player ‘arrives today’.
Surely, the London club would have preferred the €3m from Grêmio, however, they’re probably just relieved it’s over.
The midfielder believes he has an outside chance of making it to Argentina’s World Cup squad. That’s his focus for the rest of the current season, and also helping Valencia. Los Che are 14th out of 20 in La Liga, but that doesn’t mean they’re safe.
Carlos Corberán’s side are just four points clear, and have played a game more than most below them.
