The drama around Romelu Lukaku continues to be one of the most talked about situations in football.

Following the player’s open interview with Sky Italia, in which he spoke of issues in his first months back at Chelsea, Thomas Tuchel dropped the Belgium international from his squad.

Almost every pundit in football has had their say on it, and in Italy it was inevitable that Paolo Di Canio would share his opinion. The West Ham United legend is a well known talking head in Italy and isn’t afraid of sharing his opinion on current players.

Di Canio, who remains a favourite for the West Ham faithful, hasn’t been impressed with Lukaku since his return to the Premier League, and he also thinks the striker’s contribution to Inter Milan was worth less than the hype which surrounded him before the big money move to Stamford Bridge.

Quoted by Calciomercato, Di Canio said: “The player is not aware of what he said, I saw the weakness of an athlete who gives up after 6 months of the Premier League, where he arrived with arrogance.

“He co-starred in a Scudetto that Inter would have won even by fielding Zapata. At Chelsea, European champions, in a Premier League ten times harder than Serie A, he is one of many. He didn’t understand anything, if he thought he was number one; indeed, the team played much better without him. He is a fragile player, who would like to escape. He scored a sensational own goal with those words, he made a disaster.”

Now it’s down to Lukaku to make his situation better at Chelsea, and he’s got some work to do.
