Arne Slot stands ‘on the verge’ of the sack at Liverpool, with Xabi Alonso waiting in the wings to replace him.

BILD report that Liverpool’s 10th league defeat of the season, a loss to Brighton at the weekend, has sealed Slot’s fate at Anfield.

He will leave in the summer, and Liverpool have avoided an immediate dismissal only because their Champions League rivals have also dropped points.

Major overhaul for Liverpool

According to the German newspaper, a major overhaul is brewing at Liverpool this summer. Mohamed Salah is leaving, despite having a contract until 2027. His exit was announced yesterday.

His departure is see as the chance for Liverpool to offer a new manager, Alonso, the chance for a ‘genuine fresh start’.

Liverpool have maintained contact with Alonso as Slot has struggled this season. The pressure is on the Dutch coach after a disastrous title defence despite a €500m investment last summer.

He has failed to build a cohesive team with the stars, such as Florian Wirtz, who were handed to him. That is why Alonso is expected to arrive this summer.

Edwards always wanted Alonso

Michael Edwards wanted to sign him in the spring of 2024. Alonso declined at that point. He was on his way to a first league title with Bayer Leverkusen in an undefeated season and didn’t want to move.

But Edwards never lost contact, even when Liverpool won the title under Slot last season. Alonso’s agent, Iñaki Ibáñez (61), recently confirmed concrete offers for the former midfielder.

Now, according to BILD’s information, Alonso is ready for Liverpool. If they make him a concrete offer, he will accept, provided his conditions are met.

This concerns his influence on squad planning. He agreed to join Real Madrid last year despite his opinions being ignored. This included signing a centre forward and a midfielder and him joining the club for the Club World Cup.

A 4-0 defeat to PSG in that tournament meant he started his career at the Bernabeu  under pressure and he never recovered. He wants to avoid that at Liverpool, so joining this season is out of the question.

Liverpool pursuing intensely

Liverpool have been ‘pursuing him intensely’ since January. Those in charge at Anfield see his appointment as the best possible way to get a top-class squad firing on all cylinders. His development of Wirtz at Leverkusen certainly isn’t being ignored. The hope is he can give the 22-year-old, and Liverpool, a needed boost.

Alonso, meanwhile, believes that he could be ‘more of a coach again’ than he was at Real Madrid. That is where his strength lies and he wants to return to that.

Liverpool, it seems, are ready to offer it to him. Slot’s future, at least according to BILD, has already been determined. He’ll leave in the summer, and Alonso will finally arrive.
