Sunderland have a chance at reviving their interest in Armand Laurienté in the January transfer window if they wish to.
That’s at least if the latest from Tuttomercatoweb is to be believed. They report that Laurienté remains determined to get to the Premier League.
The Frenchman was ‘on the verge’ of moving to Sunderland in the summer. A deal was agreed with Sassuolo, and he was given approval to make the move.
However, the deal collapsed over the next 48 hours. While a deal had been agreed for €20m plus bonuses, Laurienté expected ‘further financial compensation’. In the end, he failed to reach an agreement with Sunderland and returned to Italy.
Now the focus is on January. Laurienté remains determined to leave and ‘move to a top club’. Or, at the very least, move to the Premier League. That’s his goal and he’s sticking to it.
Negotiations over a renewal of his current deal, which expires in 2027, have definitively fallen though also. That means Sassuolo want to sell and will let him go for the right price. That’s around €20m, same as in the summer.
The question is who needs a player with his characteristics. Sunderland were certainly keen in the summer and Regis Le Bris’ love for French players could certainly make them a candidate again.
The opportunity is there either way, with Laurienté and Sassuolo determined to part ways after failing to do so in the summer.
