By the end of Anthony Martial’s stint at Manchester United, his stock had fallen to such a level that he didn’t exactly have a queue of clubs waiting to pick him up as a free agent.

He’s now joined AEK Athens in Greece, where is being treated like an icon already, without even stepping foot on the pitch. That’s laregly due to the Manchester United connection.

Sport24 in Greece state that he is the highest paid player in AEK Athens history, something which had already been reported when the move was agreed.

AEK are putting Martial through every ritual possible. He’s been at a photoshoot manager by club president Marios Iliopoulos, and the Frenchman also visited AEK’s museum. Sport24 state that he was ‘in awe’ of an ‘effigy’ of club icon Thomas Mavros.

He also had pictures in front of the club’s trophy cabinet and with cannons (yes, actual cannons) that are a hallmark of the Greek giants.

The ex-United man also spoke to AEK’s website, saying: “I am very happy. AEK is an opportunity for me and I will give my best to achieve things, win trophies and bring joy to the world of the team.”

Now Martial needs to make sure he stays fit, after injury issues haunted him throughout much of his time at Manchester United. That could be the key for the attacker in Greece.
