Nottingham Forest’s Anthony Elanga became a target for Newcastle United late in the summer transfer window. The Magpies ended up making a considerable offer for the 22-year-old on deadline day.
While Nottingham Forest managed to keep the winger at the club, the transfer opportunity opened up the possibility of Elanga leaving in an upcoming window.
Elanga has now spoken about the interest from Newcastle and has stated that while he is happy at Forest, he could consider his future at the end of the current campaign.
The player told Fotboll Skanalen: “The environment in Nottingham is good. It is clear that you can see that Newcastle are interested, it means that I am playing good football when a big club shows interest. But Nottingham is also a big club, they have won two Champions Leagues, even though it was before I was born. But I’m happy in Nottingham and have a contract there.”
Elanga further said: “I’m focusing on Nottingham and hope to have a good season, then we’ll see what happens.”
The ex-Manchester United man was also asked if he has spoken to compatriot Alexander Isak about the move to Newcastle, and he revealed that a conversation did take place.
“Isak talked to me about it. But I said the same to him as I say to you. We have a good relationship and good chemistry when we play together. But I have a contract with Nottingham.”
Elanga has started all three of Nottingham Forest’s games so far in the Premier League, playing over 200 minutes already.
Last season, he impressed in the final third, scoring five times and racking up nine assists as well and helping the club avoid the drop.
The player clearly isn’t ruling out a future transfer, but he’ll need to have a great season to justify the levels of money which were mentioned last month.
