Tottenham Hotspur must avoid defeat against Everton on Sunday to continue in the Premier League.
Tottenham are 17th, two points ahead of West Ham United, who are 18th in the table.
Roberto De Zerbi joined the north London club in March to help them avoid the drop to the Championship.
In the Italian’s first game in charge, Spurs suffered a 1-0 defeat to Sunderland. Cristian Romero picked up an injury in the same tie and has been on the sidelines since then.
The Argentina international has been working on his recovery in England and is on course to regain full fitness ahead of the World Cup. The national team sent a member of their medical staff to the UK, to closely monitor his progress.
Surprise move from Tottenham star
The English club host Everton in the last tie of the season. Cristian Romero won’t be in London to support his team for this crucial fixture.
The centre-back already made a trip to Argentina to watch his former club, Club Atlético Belgrano, who face River Plate in the title decider on Sunday.
TyC Sports spoke to Belgrano president Luis Artime about several topics, including the 28-year-old and Catamarc Actual have relayed his comments. The official confirms the Spurs defender has been training with his side.
“Yesterday he was training and I told him I think he’s going to be the one who arrives at the World Cup in the best shape. I’ve seen him and he’s in great form. He’s going to arrive well-rested, ready to join the team at its peak,” he said.
“The rest are still competing. They’re all coming off tough competitions. Cuti has had a month and a half or two months of rest, during which he’s preparing very well and will be one of the best. He’s already working with the ball. He came with the national team’s physio.”
The president also jokingly ruled out Romero’s return to the club, citing finances as the reason.
“If it were up to him, he’d want to come back now, but we don’t have that kind of money. Let them loan him to us for a year and pay his salary, ha,” Artime explained.
Frustration in England
Argentine journalist Lucas Gatti took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to report there’s ‘anger in London’ over Cristian Romero’s trip to Argentina.
He states: ‘They were expecting him to be there to support his teammates, but he’s in Argentina. A sign of his departure in June.’
There’s been repeated claims of the South American wanting to leave Tottenham Hotspur in the summer. His latest trip may be the first step to push for a move.
