Lisandro Martinez has had a difficult season at Manchester United, largely due to his fitness battles. There is now a chance the Argentine could leave this summer.
Whenever the defender has played for the Red Devils, his impact has been clear to see. He offers impressive ability on the ball and brings a lot of composure to the backline. His ability to beat the opposition press makes him stand out in the current squad.
However, injuries have become a theme. He played 18 times in the Premier League in the 2025/26 campaign and featured in only 20 games in the 2024/25 season.
Now, Manchester United could be handed the opportunity of moving on from the 28-year-old.
Amorim keen on reunion
MilanNews report that AC Milan are keen on adding a new defender to the side. They appeared close to signing Benfica’s Antonio Silva at the end of last week but that one is wobbling.
As a result, new manager Ruben Amorim has stepped in and has two names on his shortlist. One is Goncalo Inacio, who played under the ex-Manchester United manager at Sporting. The second is Martinez, who thrived in a wide centre-back role at Old Trafford under the Portuguese.
Amorim is hoping that one of them joins him at Milan and the first steps have been taken.
The Rossoneri have made contact for both players, with the report pointing out that they’ve spoken to Martinez’s entourage.
Contact with Manchester United is yet to take place and that can define the move for the Italian side.
Deal likely complex
As things stand, Martinez’s contract at Manchester United runs until 2027 but there is an option for a one-year renewal. Even if that isn’t exercised, Milan will likely struggle to sign the Argentine.
Despie the injuries, Martinez is a vital player for the Red Devils and he impacts games whenever fit. Michael Carrick’s side have enough options to make up for his absence but the Argentina international enhances how the team operates in possession.
Due to the value he offers, Milan may have to pay a significant amount to sign him. Without Champions League football, paying that amount will be difficult. And Martinez may not be convinced either, as he will return to playing in the Champions League next season.
