The Catalan media are fretting on behalf of Barcelona over Marlon.

It had been expected the defender, who spent last season on loan at Nice, would be moving to West Ham this summer. That deal then slipped away, but it was fortunate that Southampton came in and would sign the Brazilian to save the day.

In their Monday edition, Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo report Marlon had ‘almost two feet in Southampton’, it was thought the deal was on the verge of being done and there was still hope it could be sorted out over the next few weeks.

However, the Saints signing Jannik Vestergaard from Borussia Monchengladbach at the end of last week has sent negative waves all the way to Catalonia.

It’s now doubted whether Southampton will still have a need to move for Marlon.

This creates problems for Barcelona, who want to sell the player as quickly as possible. There’s no room in the Barca squad for Marlon and therefore the club aren’t keen to take him on preseason to the US.

Maybe Barca should have considered all of this when placing lofty fee demands on the transfer.
