Chelsea had made an attempt to sign Eliesse Ben Seghir towards the end of the summer window.
That’s at least what Foot Mercato are reporting, and they explain why Chelsea failed to close this operation.
On August 31st, the winger left AS Monaco and completed a permanent move to Bayer Leverkusen, and the two clubs had finalised the deal for a reported fee of around €30m.
Foot Mercato now report Enzo Maresca’s side ‘almost hijacked’ the Morocco international from Bayer Leverkusen’s clutches late in the window.
It’s claimed that hours before the Bundesliga club signed the 21-year-old, the Blues made a last-ditch attempt to secure his services, and the player would have given serious thought to joining the Blues.
According to the report, the Moroccan attacker took time to weigh up the pros and cons of joining the Club World Cup winners and even considered responding to their approach. In the end, Eliesse Ben Seghir decided to complete a move to the German club. Foot Mercato make no mention of the details of Chelsea’s proposal.
Eliesse Ben Seghir managed nine goals and four assists for Monaco last season.
