João Virgínia probably didn’t plan to be Sporting Club de Portugal’s first choice when he left Everton this summer, but the pieces are falling into place for him on that front.

That’s at least according to Record, who report that all is going to plan, and he could keep him place at Estoril this weekend despite the return of current number one Rui Silva.

The newspaper explains that despite Silva returning to training this week, manager Rui Borges is not rushing to make a change.

The former Everton goalkeeper has made a very positive impression on the Sporting manager with his performances in Silva’s absence and Borges now believe he has a choice ‘between two starters’.

He is currently leaning towards sticking with Virgínia as the signing from Everton has convinced him and gained enough space on Silva to ‘sow doubt’. There is also some doubt about Silva as he’s still feeling some pain in the thumb on his left hand.

Sporting don’t want to take any risks, even though he’s capable of training, and that’s giving Virgínia his chance to keep cementing his place.

It’s all very positive for him, with the decision to leave Everton in the summer already paying off for him, albeit with a little slice of luck.
