Argentine legend Alejandro Sabella has died at the age of 66, according to reports from the South American media.

Outlet La Nación was the first to report the former manager’s death, who’d been in hospital since the 25th of November, the day when Diego Maradona passed away.

The report only mentions that he’d been struggling with ‘several health problems’, even though it was a cardiac issue which took him to hospital last week.

Sabella’s work as a manager of Estudiantes and the Argentina national team is what makes him a public figure in his country these days, but he’s remembered in England for playing for Sheffield United and Leeds United.

The Argentine media routinely make sure to say that Sabella left a good impression everywhere he worked, and that’s when Leeds and Sheffield United often come into the discussion given how unusual those transfers were at the time.

He’s called a ‘maestro’ by local outlets who’ve been reporting his death, and was one of the country’s most important football figures.
