Tottenham Hotspur are going through something of an injury crisis at the moment. Almost each match brings another man-down situation, with Richarlison taking his turn in the defeat to Aston Villa.
Thomas Frank has a cloud of negativity following him, with the FA Cup exit not helping, and he’s navigating all of this through a fitness minefield. Tottenham aren’t only being hit with new injuries, but old ones dragging on much longer than they were initially expected to.
These issues aren’t only causing worries at Spurs, with concern spreading to national sides.
On January 9th, Sport Witness covered concern building in Uruguay regarding Rodrigo Bentancur. Frank suggesting the midfielder’s latest injury isn’t a trivial one had encouraged such worry, and the country’s football association were waiting for medical results.
Uruguay face England at Wembley on March 27th and that’s a key get-together for Marcelo Bielsa. The manager is expected to use that gathering to finalise his World Cup plans.
The USA tournament kicks off in mid June and, therefore, time is running out.
Tests results show tear for Tottenham player
Sunday’s edition of El Pais, Uruguay’s leading newspaper, covers the concern. There’s ‘alarm bells’ around the national team related to the Tottenham midfielder.
Indeed, El Pais’ headline states: ‘Bentancur’s Injury Worries the Entire National Team’
Sources from the national side have told the newspaper a hamstring tear has been confirmed.

They add: ‘They also told him that a medical board meeting would be held in the coming hours to determine if he would need surgery.’
Surgery could depend on whether it’s a full or partial tear. In the event the Tottenham player does go under the knife, then he’s expected to miss around three months.
From now, that would take him to mid April. Uruguay’s worry is partly that such a timeframe could extend and endanger his fitness at the start of the World Cup.
Bentancur is a key man for Bielsa, which increases worry relating to the Tottenham player.
