Ajax made an inquiry for Aston Villa midfielder Leander Dendoncker before eventually deciding on a move for Jordan Henderson.
That’s according to Voetbal Primeur and journalist Dennie van Laar, relayed by Voetbal Nieuws, who say the 28-year-old was very much an option for the Dutch side.
Dendoncker is currently on the verge of making a move to Italian champions Napoli, with the Serie A side having moved this week to secure him on loan until the end of the season.
That move pretty much came out of nowhere, with it explained in Italy that the midfielder had not been planning on leaving Aston Villa before Napoli convinced him of the switch.
Van Laar and VP report, though, that Ajax ‘enquired’ about the midfielder’s services and whether he could be gotten from Aston Villa this month.
At that point they were looking to add an experienced midfielder to their young squad and a move seemed logical for Dendoncker, who needs minutes if he is to get into Belgium’s squad for Euro 2024.
Thus, initial talks took place, but it soon became apparent to Ajax that it was not ‘financially feasible’ to take him to Amsterdam. Thus, they eventually moved to bring in Jordan Henderson from Al Ettifaq.
Fortunately for Dendoncker, he’s now on his way to Napoli so hasn’t missed out on the move he needs, meaning everyone is happy despite no agreement being struck.
