Former Rangers defender Lorenzo Amoruso believes summer signing Joey Barton can become the leader of the team. Barton joined the SL side after leaving Burnley this summer, and will experience his first game Old Firm clash with Celtic this weekend.

Speaking to TMW ahead of Saturday’s derby Amourso was asked about his thoughts with regards to Rangers signing Barton in the last window.

He believes the former Manchester City star can become a leader for the Rangers midfield because he’s a player who never gives in.

“At first, when I was in Scotland, he was the best on the field. In the second half he fell off, but with his determination and his strength, he made it clear he can be a leader. He has to do everything to be a beacon for the midfield. When you wear that shirt you have to give something more. Joey is one who never gives up,” said the former Rangers defender.

Celtic and Rangers go head to head in a league game for the first time in 5 years this weekend, and with home advantage, the SPL champions will be seen as slight favourites to take all three points.

However, Rangers showed last season in the cup they can compete against their arch rivals despite only returning to the SPL this season.
