Chelsea told Moises Caicedo they’d ‘do everything possible’ to sign him from Brighton and Hove Albion this summer, before finally getting a deal done.
That’s according to his agent Manuel Sierra, who has revealed the assurances Chelsea gave him that a deal would happen at some point.
Caicedo joined the Blues in a €116m deal from Brighton in the middle of August after months of speculation regarding his future with the Seagulls.
He ended up in something of a transfer tussle between Chelsea and Liverpool, with the latter coming and making a late bid as they looked to strengthen their own midfield following the departures of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho.
That helped to push Caicedo’s asking price higher and higher, with the Blues eventually winning by offering more to Brighton than what they originally wanted to pay.
Throughout the saga it appeared that Caicedo was flip flopping between the two clubs, but Sierra says they were in constant contact with those in charge at Stamford Bridge, receiving assurances they would get a deal done.
“Chelsea was there to support us at all times, they told us that they were going to get us out of Brighton, that they would do everything possible,” he said.
“The whole operation became quite complicated, because Brighton wanted a lot of money. Liverpool came in, we didn’t expect that.
“They appeared suddenly; they made things difficult; but Chelsea supported the cause to finish in blue. We asked for time for the offer to be equalled and surpassed. It took days, but it came together.”
