Now that André Onana is ready to make his debut in Manchester United’s pre-season, we may forget how long it took for the Red Devils to have his signing done.
It had been no secret that Erik ten Hag would look for a new goalkeeper this summer, and despite the Cameroonian being the first option, the English club struggled a little to reach the Nerazzurri’s demands for the transfer.
With Onana now training with Manchester United’s squad, his agent felt comfortable to speak about the process. Albert Botines was interviewed by CalcioMercato.it, and shared some details about the Red Devils’ pursuit of the player.
The representative explained that Ten Hag’s side started their pursuit back in April, and there was a quite heavy competition from the Premier League for the goalkeeper.
“It all started a few months ago. Around April many people inquired about the player. Tottenham asked for information, Chelsea had a very strong interest. There were meetings in London and Chelsea had also met with Inter, but the figure of ten Hag was key. We are looking forward to facing great coaches like Guardiola and trying to win titles with Manchester United. We have a great desire to rock.”
Onana now has a contract with Manchester United running until 2028, with an option for a further year. With the club already posting pictures of him training with the squad, it seems he may have a chance of making his debut in the friendly against Real Madrid tonight.
