Tottenham Hotspur signed Mathys Tel on loan from Bayern Munich in February 2025. He featured regularly in the second half of last season and Spurs made his stay permanent later that year.
The Premier League side made this decision right after appointing Thomas Frank as Ange Postecoglou’s successor.
Frank left him out of Tottenham’s Champions League squad in September. Therefore, the forward has had to settle for minutes in domestic competitions. Tel has scored three goals from 527 minutes from 15 league matches.
Earlier this week, Frank again omitted the 20-year-old from his Champions League squad. On Tuesday, Gazzetta dello Sport reported the player was unhappy with the manager’s decision.
Sky Deutschland now pick up on that and provide more details on what happened behind the scenes.
The France U21 international is unhappy in London and wants to leave Spurs in the winter market. In fact, Sky claim he feels ‘unfairly treated’ by Frank and doesn’t want to accept the manager’s decision regarding the Champions League squad.
Therefore, Tel has decided to change clubs in January and will reconsider his decision if Tottenham were to part ways with Frank. His representatives have already made this clear to the north London club.
Tottenham told of player’s annoyance
Sky have found that that his agent, Gadiri Camara, travelled to London on Monday, right after Frank omitted the player from the Champions League list. The agent has informed Spurs that he wants clarity over his client’s future by the end of this week.
This is because the Frenchman is already being pursued by other clubs. The report state he has received ‘attractive offers’ from elsewhere. There’s no specific mention of the clubs that have submitted proposals to sign him.
However, Sky claim Paris FC have shown ‘strong interest’ in Tel while unnamed clubs from England and Spain have contacted him. A return to the Bundesliga is currently not on the table.
Frank’s immediate future may not be at risk after Spurs secured a 2-0 Champions League win over Borussia Dortmund yesterday. This could push Tel towards the exit door.
In reality, someone has been sending endless Tel-wants-out messages to the French media for weeks. At first it felt like a plea for minutes, but there’s every chance it made his situation worse.
