This week, reports from the Italian media revealed that Monza goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio turned down a move to Newcastle United.
With the Magpies needing a replacement for Nick Pope, it was said they went after the 26-year-old and saw him refusing a transfer to the Premier League.
Di Gregorio is a very wanted man in the Serie A market, and that’s why his agent was now interviewed by TV Play, quoted by CalcioMercato.it.
Speaking about the rumours which have been surrounding the goalkeeper, Alberto Belloni talked a little about his preferences, and said something about a move abroad which could well be a message for Newcastle United.
“For the boy’s future, I would prefer to keep him in Italy and not abroad, because going to England, for example, he would have different steps, although the Premier League always attracts everyone,” said Belloni.
Di Gregorio left Inter Milan for Monza in 2020, first on a loan and then on a permanent deal, and the Nerazzurri may regret that €4m transfer. That’s because given the goalkeeper’s great form this season, he’s now valued by Transfermarkt at €12m.
We shall see whether Newcastle’s interest will continue in the summer, while his agent now even gave a hint about how much he should cost in the coming months.
“He can probably be sold for around €20m, the problem is that few teams in Italy have that spending power.”
