Back in the January window, Newcastle United had reportedly made an offer to sign Andreas Samaris from Benfica.

According to the Portuguese press, the Magpies’ intention would be to get him on a loan deal now and give him a contract in the summer, and he becomes a free agent.

However, the bid was rejected both by the club and the player, who didn’t look very excited with the chance to join the Premier League side.

Now his agent Yannis Emmanouilidis has given an interview to newspaper A Bola, and has explained that the midfielder really wants to stay at the Eagles.

“Everyone knows that Andreas wants to stay at Benfica, but we have never discussed a contract with Benfica or we are not talking about numbers”, Emmanouilidis told A Bola.

“I repeat what I said: we do not have any proposal from Benfica to renew contract and it is not true that we have discussed contract values with Benfica.”

A Bola then mentions the links with Newcastle United, but the agent closes the doors to an exit for now: “There is nothing with other clubs”.

This is a strange situation, as most of the players in the Portuguese league dream of joining a Premier League side. Now we wonder if Newcastle’s offer was real, or maybe the player and his agent needed an argument to get a renewal offer from the Eagles.
