Liverpool remain in the picture for the potential signing of Dayot Upamecano, as Bayern Munich fail to make progress on a new deal.

That’s according to SportBILD, who say that the defender could demand as much as €16m a year from any club.

The newspaper explains that the poker game around Upamecano, whose contract expires next summer, has been dragging on for months. Bayern’s supervisory board have no numbers available at this moment in time.

They’ve been cautious when it came to expiring contracts in the past and are wary of repeating previous mistakes.

The fear is that the €17m signing-on bonus given to Alphonso Davies could now be a benchmark for Upamecano and his team to use. His agent, Moussa Sissoko, is certainly experienced and knows the market well. He could use that figure to his advantage.

Liverpool are interested in his client, but so are Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Chelsea. Bayern, know they have a decision to make. Upamecano is currently valued at €60m, so losing him on a free would be a blow. But the question is whether they want to hand him wages of €16m-a-year to keep him or look elsewhere.

Alternatives are being eyed up, including Marc Guehi and Nico Schlotterbeck. Both of whom, interestingly, have been linked with Liverpool as well.
