Manchester United target João Neves was a subject in the interview that Jorge Mendes gave to Record.
The Portuguese newspaper today has a front page story with the super agent, and among the many players discussed, there were some questions about the Benfica midfielder.
Record started by asking whether Benfica will hold Neves until the summer, of if there’s any chance of a January move.
“Benfica have two players who are highly coveted: João Neves and António Silva. Then their president, Rui Costa, will have to decide when he’s ready to consider a deal. It’s always the club’s decision. I can take the proposals and the conditions…,” Jorge Mendes told Record.
They then quizzed him whether there have been offers for the duo.
“Yes, there have been situations in which any of them would have had offers if the door had been open. The players will stay at Benfica until the end of the season, that’s for sure, and then Rui Costa will decide what’s best to do. And then, as with all the other players: meetings, talks and, when the time is right, the decisions will be made.”
Mendes then confirmed that the clubs who want the duo are pretty big.
“Of course, when we’re talking about two top players, we’re always talking about the best European clubs.”
Last week, it was claimed that Manchester United had a priority over João Neves, negotiated while the clubs agreed the loan of Alvaro Fernandez to Benfica.
The Eagles, however, came up with an official statement claiming such a deal did not exist, as they’re free to negotiate the midfielder with any club they want to.
Either way, Neves is one of the biggest talents in Portugal right now, and it would be no surprise to see Manchester United bidding for him in a near future.
