Gianluigi Donnarumma had no future under Luis Enrique at Paris Saint-Germain, and that made it easier for Manchester City to complete his signing on deadline day.
The goalkeeper made his Manchester City debut in the derby win over Manchester United at the Etihad last weekend.
Donnarumma’s agent Vincenzo Raiola had a chat with Radio CRC to discuss several topics, including his move to Manchester City, and Calciomercato have relayed his comments.
The Italy international was key part of the PSG squad that won the treble last season and his achievements for club and country haven’t stopped him from being criticised, and this doesn’t please his representative.
“There have been many coaches who went crazy for Donnarumma. In recent years, wherever he has gone, he has made his mark,” he said.
“I don’t care about people’s criticism; even phenomena such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi have been criticised. Those who criticise phenomena just want to show off.”
The stopper’s footwork has also been a subject of discussion and questions were raised whether he can fit into Pep Guardiola’s system at Manchester City.
On this subject, Raiola explained: “Controversy over his footwork? I don’t understand the reason for this criticism. Aside from the fact that I’ve never seen Gianluigi make any glaring mistakes with his feet, what matters most to me is the journey Gianluigi has had with us.”
Last season, Manchester City won the Community Shield and finished third in the table, 11 points behind league winners Liverpool, and are currently eighth in the table this season. According to the agent, Guardiola wanted his client to give a boost to the English club.
“Guardiola was delighted to welcome Donnarumma to the team,” he added.
“Beyond the technical issues of how the manager wants to use Gianluigi on the pitch, he asked him to wake up the team because Manchester needs someone who can liven up the atmosphere.
“Donnarumma is a leader. He’s a bit quiet at times, but he always makes himself heard at important moments. Everything he does, he does of his own free will.”
