Romelu Lukaku is yet to play a single minute for Napoli this season.
As the Belgian continues his recovery from a hamstring injury, Everton have apparently tried to bring him back to Goodison Park.
This comes from today’s Il Mattino, who have taken a detailed look at the Italian club’s possible exits in January. While the situations of Lorenzo Lucca, who could be off to Nottingham Forest, and Noa Lang find prominent mention, Lukaku’s future is also discussed.
The newspaper claim Everton have explored the possibility of signing the Belgian this month. It should be safely presumed that initial contact was probably made with the striker’s entourage.
This is because it is further claimed that Lukaku’s agent Federico Pastorello has turned down the idea of a transfer. Pasterello is well known agent in Italy and it’s not the first time he’s represented the Belgian, who goes through more agencies than most.
As well as Everton, Besiktas also came forward for the 32-year-old as the Turkish club search for a possible Tammy Abraham replacement. The Belgium international is expected to stay in Naples until the end of the season. He is committed to making a mark under Antonio Conte, especially with Lucca likely on his way out of Napoli.
Everton perhaps better without former star

Things can change in the summer for Lukaku. Despite that, a move to Saudi Arabia would be much likelier than a return to England.
Considering Lukaku’s recent fitness problems, Everton may be better off without him. There is no doubt about his ability, as he contributed to 25 goals in Serie A last season. But he is now 32-years-of-age and commands a massive wage wherever he goes.
The Toffees should ideally look at younger profiles that weigh much less on their wage bill. Besides, Lukaku always brings some drama with him and the Merseyside club shouldn’t want any of that.
