Newcastle United will have to tussle with Bayer Leverkusen to sign 1. FSV Mainz 05’s Kacper Potulski this summer.
The 18-year-old joined the German club’s youth system in 2023 and made his way into their first team earlier this season.
His performances have seen Newcastle United and other clubs set their sights on the centre-back. Potulski played 1,542 minutes from 23 matches for FSV Mainz’s first team.
His league stats per game are as follows:
- Appearances: 15
- Starts: 9
- Total minutes: 1,060
- Minutes per game: 71
- Interceptions: 1.2
- Tackles: 1.0
- Recoveries: 2.5
- Clearances: 4.9
- Blocked shots: 1.0
- Duels won: 4.0
He has established himself at the Bundesliga side this year, helping him make his debut for Poland on May 31st.
Newcastle United have to act fast
Bayer Leverkusen and the Premier League side are both looking at Kacper Potulski. That’s according to Sky Deutschland, who state these two clubs are ‘explicitly interested’ in the 1. FSV Mainz 05 young star.
The Poland international recently changed agents and this indicates a move could be on the cards this summer.
Bayer Leverkusen have already held a first meeting to try and sign him, and it’s not clear whether the meeting was with his camp, FSV Mainz or both.
Either way, Eddie Howe’s side would have to step up quickly if they wish to get ahead in the transfer race. It’s unclear whether the Magpies will make further efforts considering there are other players on their list.
Four days ago, Sport Witness covered claims from Spain of Newcastle United’s interest in Real Betis’ Natan, valued at €45m.
Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund looked at Potulski as an alternative to Joane Gadou but won’t make advances after completing the latter’s signing.
It could be a battle between Newcastle United and Bayer Leverkusen for the Pole. He has no release clause, and clubs will have to negotiate a fee with FSV Mainz.

Kacper Potulski has a contract until 2028, and Transfermarkt value him at €18m. This is the highest value of his short career.
