The Portuguese press continues to be very confident about a deal between Manchester City and Velez Sarsfield for the transfer of Thiago Almada.
Newspaper Jornal de Notícias writes today that the winger’s agent, Augustín Jimenez, is back in Argentina with a new offer from the Premier League side.
After having a €12m bid rejected, Manchester City are now offering something closer to €16m, which is reportedly the amount of the player’s release clause.
Velez are still trying to hold Almada by offering him a new contract and increasing the release clause to €25m, but this is just a small possibility, given his wish to move to Europe and the difference between what the clubs can offer.
Jornal de Notícias says the meeting between Jimenez and Velez should happen in the next few days, and that’s when we should have more updates about the case.
Despite some news saying Boca Juniors have entered the race for the winger as well, newspaper Record has a story today claiming that Velez are not keen on selling a player to their rivals, so that should have no impact in the negotiations with City.
Once Pep Guardiola signs Almada, he should loan the youngster out to Sporting for a season.
