On Thursday, Spanish newspaper Marca didn’t want Real Madrid or Barcelona on their front page. They dedicated it to Adrian, who was the hero in Liverpool’s UEFA Supercup title the night before.
It was a great tribute for a player who’s won his first title at the age of 32, and now he’s spoken to Marca about how big it was for him.
“It’s absolutely spectacular that a Spanish newspaper of the entity of Marca dedicates that great cover to a good person and a decent goalkeeper [laughs]. I don’t have it yet, but my family does and surely some are framed.”
Regarding the penalty he saved from Tammy Abraham, he says he’d studied all of Chelsea’s takers, but had a special tip for the last one.
“You have takers studied, but in games of that level they usually change corners under pressure. Abraham usually takes to my left, but the goalkeeper coach told me to hold on as if he shot in the middle I could get it with my right foot.”
Adrian was also asked about how Liverpool chased him to get his signing this summer, and he says the interest from the Reds wasn’t exactly new.
“It comes from some time ago. Their scouts had always been watching me, but it didn’t come true because I had a contract with West Ham or because they ended up signing other goalkeepers. Three weeks ago they called us to tell us they had an offer for Mignolet and the number one goal to replace him was me.”
Regarding the feeling of winning a title just after he’s arrived Liverpool, Adrian said: “It tastes like glory, full happiness and the work and sacrifice I’ve been doing for many years. This has been the icing on nine days at Liverpool in which I have had the opportunity to debut at Anfield and to face a final that wasn’t easy, having played only one game and with just 5-6 training sessions with my new teammates.”
Adrian was supposed to be replacing Alisson while the Brazilian is injured, but since the Spaniard got a knock while celebrating the title on Wednesday, he’s now doubtful for the upcoming Premier League fixtures.
