Thomas Tuchel is pushing for Bayern Munich to sign Mateo Kovacic from Chelsea this summer, as the Croatian is one of his ‘absolute dream players’.
That’s according to FBC Inside, relaying information from Sport 1, who say it is Tuchel who is pushing for a move for the 28-year-old.
Reports over the last week have indicated that Bayern are keen on a deal for Kovacic as they plan to reshape their squad for Tuchel in the summer.
Those made it clear that it was the Bayern boss who was keen on the transfer happening and Sport 1 back that up today.
They explain that Kovacic was one of Tuchel’s ‘absolute favourite players’ during his time in charge of Chelsea and thus it is ‘no real surprise’ to see him being linked with Bayern.
The German giants are looking for a “strong player and strong tackler who ensures creativity and stability” in midfield and Kovacic can certainly be that man. His ability to play as both a six and an eight appeals to the club and Tuchel.
Another advantage is that Kovacic was born in Austria and spent a large part of his childhood there so can speak perfect German and would not face any issues integrating into the squad.
There is also a belief that there is a transfer there to be done, with Sport 1 claiming that Kovacic has made it is clear he is ‘open to a change’ in the summer. Chelsea are also not putting any obstacles in his way should a suitable offer arrive.
That is mainly due to the fact Kovacic’s current contract expires in 2024 and this is the last window in which they can receive a good fee for him. They also need funds to help get them in compliance with Financial Fair Play.
At the moment Bayern are yet to make their move and there haven’t been any discussions between the club and player.
That is because Tuchel has not yet got himself actively involved in squad planning for next season but that is due to change in the near future, at which point it seems he will likely push for a deal for Kovacic.
