David De Gea has experienced a rebirth of sorts after leaving Manchester United. His future at Fiorentina is up in the air and attracting a lot of attention in Italy.
Earlier this year, Sport Witness covered the Spaniard’s comments about his exit from Old Trafford. He described the break year in his career as something that transformed him, helping him turn his career around in Florence.
He has been a regular between the sticks for two seasons, witnessing their ups and downs during this time.
De Gea’s current deal runs out in 2028 but there have suggestions that he can leave in the summer. It now seems like only Manchester United can take him away.
Player could desire return
Journalist Luca Calamai spoke to Caffe Nero Bollente, addressing some hot topics at the Florence club.
He opened up about De Gea’s future, suggesting he is keen on staying at Fiorentina. But only a call from Manchester United will tempt him into leaving in the summer.
The Italian said – via FirenzeViola: “It seems to me that Fiorentina is a giant question mark no matter how you look at it.
“A few days ago, thanks also to the news given by Niccolò Ceccarini, we were convinced that at least with De Gea, for example, everything was decided because the player has clearly and unequivocally expressed his desire to stay in Florence, leaving only a glimmer of hope for a return to Manchester United.”
The journalist clarified that not long ago, De Gea’s future at La Viola appeared certain . But things aren’t the same now, with Juventus prowling.
“Will De Gea stay? It seemed certain, but today in Turin the rumors are starting again that De Gea is among the candidates for the Bianconeri jersey.
“There’s also talk of contacts between Fiorentina and Juventus on this front, so the question is: does De Gea want to stay, but does Fiorentina want to keep him, or do they want to invest permanently in the young Martinelli and save a hefty salary?”
In a nutshell, it feels like everything will come down to the Spaniard. He has a long-term contract and has no real reason to depart, unless a bigger club calls him or Manchester United make an unlikely move.
Return unlikely
Altay Bayindir’s future is in doubt. His exit can leave Manchester United looking around for a back-up but it is unlikely De Gea accepts that role. He would get much more regular first-team football at Fiorentina.
