On Thursday, Corriere dello Sport outright denied the idea of Lazio signing Manchester City’s Claudio Echeverri on a loan deal.

The 19-year-old was seen at a restaurant close to Lazio’s training ground in Rome some days ago, leading to speculation that the Italian side were holding talks to sign the youngster. But Corriere dello Sport denied it – rather firmly.

It now seems as if this perception is not shared by all sections of the Italian press.

Gazzetta dello Sport have reported that the denials about Lazio’s move for Echeverri have come from the Biancocelesti themselves. But the deal is very much in the pipeline and it is closely linked to Manchester City’s interest in defender Mario Gila.

The centre-back has impressed at Lazio since his arrival from Real Madrid in the summer of 2022.

Italy’s pink journal believes that the Citizens have ‘serious intentions’ about signing the Spaniard and they are not scared by his price tag of €50m. There is also interest from Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.

In fact, Manchester City’s surveys for the 24-year-old are becoming insistent and the report feels fairly confident that Echeverri can be part of this major deal.

All of this does point to something that is going on behind the scenes. The fact that there is still uncertainty behind Echeverri’s visit to the Italian capital speaks volumes for this possibility.
