On Wednesday there were various interviews with Matz Sels dotted around the Belgian media.
The main one of interest to Newcastle United supporters was the goalkeeper speaking about his future: “At the moment, I could make statements in all directions: I want to stay in Anderlecht, I want to leave, I want another club. But I have to wait.
“I depend on Newcastle’s project, to which I remain bound for several years. I have not had news in a few months but I do not let it get in my head. As soon as the club has ensured their stay in the Premier League, which seems well started, they will contact me.”
One of the quotes was: “I cannot remember a match where I really went wrong.”
Well, within hours those words were to come back and bite Sels on the behind, as he had a torrid match against Standard Liege.
Standard won 2-1 and Sels made an absolute mess of the first goal, Het Nieuwsblad believe it’s fate coming to taunt the Newcastle owned player after he tested it.
Sels is the main feature of the post match coverage and it’ll all come as a blow to the footballer, just when everything had been going so well.
