It’s a time when footballers fly off around the world and drop hints about transfers or share their disgruntlement, whilst being prepared to dismiss it all as a translation issue when they get back to their clubs.
There’s also often some stories around which are different from the norm, like Jan Vertonghen being a bit upset his Tottenham teammates don’t share his love of cycling, or Mousa Dembele opening a luxury hotel.
Yep, Tottenham’s midfield maestro is branching out into the hotelier business and his first effort looks rather swish indeed. Gazet van Antwerpen report that Dembele, in partnership with his mother and sister, today opened De Gulde Schoen in Antwerp.
The Tottenham player is quoted as saying: “My sister Assita is the more social of us two. She has loved to be surrounded by a lot of people from an early age. Even though she has no experience in the hospitality industry, I’m sure she will run the hotel brilliantly.”
Those rooms cost €355 to €750 a night, which is certainly ambitious for Antwerp.
If you don’t want to spend that much but still fancy having a look at what Dembele is trying to make a success of, then Assita has another plan: “The restaurant serves a modern Mediterranean cuisine with Asian influences. Our dishes are meant to be shared. Breakfast has also been carefully considered. Mousa, our mum and I like to have an extensive breakfast. In Antwerp there are not so many nice places to have breakfast quickly. We serve breakfast à la carte and in menu form. In the afternoon you can come to us for a high tea.”
