Wigan Athletic goalscoring hero Will Grigg has told Spanish newspaper Marca he and his teammates couldn’t stop laughing through fear when they watched videos of Manchester City.
The Northern Ireland international’s late strike against the Premier League leaders on Monday night secured a place in the FA Cup quarter finals for Wigan Athletic.
Asked by Marca how Wigan Athletic prepared for Manchester City, Grigg said: “If I’m honest, we watched their videos and we always ended up laughing. We didn’t know how to stop them! The coaching staff and the coach gave us a plan and we did the best we could. They had a lot of time on the ball, so we knew it was very difficult to stop them.”
“But we waited and waited… until the goal came. We were going to have some moment… or some occasion during the 90 minutes. I think we had two shots in the whole game and finally we put one in. It’s not bad at all.”
Wigan Athletic have become something of a bogey team for Manchester City in the FA Cup, and their victory on Monday was their third in recent years over the Premier League club.
Their most memorable win over Manchester City came in 2013, when Ben Watson’s late header secured the Cup for Wigan Athletic.
The League One side will now meet Southampton in the next round at the DW Stadium, and another trip to Wembley could on the cards for the club if they can get past the Saints.
Back to Will Grigg, he’s just pleased to be known for something other than Euro 2016’s standout chant: “I prefer that they know me for being a scorer than for a song. No matter the rival, regardless of the level. Like today. That’s what I care about.”
