With Italy out of the World Cup and Antonio Conte not living his best form at Chelsea, it was just a matter of time before the rumours of his return to the national team started being taken seriously.

This time it isn’t even just another newspaper story. It’s an important person analysing the possibility, which seems to be pretty real.

Roberto Fabbricini, general secretary of the Italian National Olympic Committee and extraordinary commissioner of the Italian Football Federation, has spoken to journalists this Thursday and mentioned four names who could take charge of the national team.

“The names are those that you know. I know that Mancini is in Rome but hasn’t been contacted, Conte seems eager to return to the blue shirt, Ancelotti opens and closes the door, Ranieri isn’t out either,” he said (via Calcio Mercato).

“No pole position, we must evaluate the pros and cons, and we must also deal with the host, assessing the availability of the Federation and also explaining to those who will come that there will be a new governance. Now, however, we will evaluate what to do together with Costacurta.”

Italy don’t have a manager since sacking Giampiero Ventura last year. The boss failed to qualify the national team for the 2018 World Cup even with a playoff attempt against Sweden, and now the Italian Football Federation look for the best name to rebuild the Azzura.

Although these four managers look strong for the job, it’s safe to say that they all live pretty different moments in their careers. This shouldn’t be an easy choice to make, but not many would argue against the likelihood of Antonio Conte being available, given the cloud currently hanging over Chelsea.
