Former Southampton forward Peter Crouch has revealed he found it tough signing for Southampton from Aston Villa.
Crouch signed from Aston Villa in 2004, but previous to that he’d had a spell with Southampton’s bitter rivals Portsmouth.
Speaking to FourFourTwo, Crouch was asked if he found it difficult signing for Southampton due to him being a former Portsmouth player. “Joining Southampton after being a bit of a failure at Aston Villa…. that was tough. I was booed by my own fans in my first game. I had to show character to win them all over and thankfully I did that.”
Crouch didn’t have the best of spells with Aston Villa, following his move from Portsmouth in 2002. He struggled to get regular games whilst at Villa Park, and was often overlooked by David O’Leary.
His move to Southampton helped to kick start his career, and despite his early struggles with the fans he went on have a successful time at St Mary’s.
Crouch would go on to have a second spell with Portsmouth, under Harry Redknapp, after his move to Liverpool in 2005 didn’t go as expected.
