Sergio Roberto isn’t in a hurry over his Barcelona contract renewal, but then neither are the club. Both player and those in charge at Barcelona are ‘walking in the same direction’ and whilst a renewal is expected, it doesn’t seem to be imminent.

That’s been the case for a while and it could lead some to wonder just what the delay is. Roberto has a contract until June 2019, but it’s his relatively low release clause which is more the worry.

Clubs can sign the player for just €40m, which is a reasonable amount in today’s market. The 25 year old has subsequently been linked with a list of Premier League sides, including Manchester United and Chelsea.

Catalan newspaper Sport state on Wednesday that Roberto has received ‘important proposals’ from Manchester United, Chelsea and Juventus, but is minded to continue where he is.

It often feels like Premier League clubs are dragged in to illustrate Roberto’s commitment to Barcelona and his desire to continue where he is. That could be the case again, rather than Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte having genuinely serious interest.

Although Sergi Roberto would be a good addition to both the Manchester United and Chelsea squads, a Barcelona exit just doesn’t feel likely.
