Whether there’s a scrap of truth in it or not, English rumours of Southampton fancying Paco Alcacer for the January window have caught the attention in Spain.
First, Mundo Deportivo suggested it could be a possibility, and then they pretty much ruled out the player having interest in a switch to the Premier League club.
On Friday, the Catalan newspaper said Alcacer ‘would only leave Barca in winter for a solid project and the offer that appeared yesterday from Southampton would not be the one to convince him’.
Despite working with Mauricio Pellegrino previously, at Valencia, and therefore knowing the coach likes him, Mundo Deportivo claimed Southampton isn’t an ‘irresistible temptation’.
The other Barcelona leaning daily newspaper, Sport, don’t rule out a move, saying ‘Southampton opens the door’, and explaining Alacer could be looking for a way out of the club.
It’s explained Barcelona would likely prefer a permanent transfer in order to help round off the player on accounts. Given he’s not on huge wages, relative to some other Barca fringe players, there’s no great rush to get rid of Alcacer.
