German magazine SportBild have been speaking to Hamburg Sporting Director Jens Todt. It’s no surprise that as part of the chat, things came around to Pierre-Michel Lasogga, with the striker moving to Leeds United on loan for the season, and Hamburg continuing to pay a percentage of his wages.
It’s not a great transfer situation for HSV, and Lasogga’s instant Leeds United impact was covered widely in Germany. Should the striker carry on as he’s started, and score a good number of goals this season, then Hamburg, currently struggling for the same, will end up looking silly.
Todt, being the sporting director, will be most responsible.
But Todt thinks it was inevitable that Lasogga would do just great on loan somewhere else, telling SportBild: “It always happens when a player who doesn’t get enough games, one can think about a loan together. With Pierre now it’s exactly what one expects to happen: The player is bet upon, flourishes and possibly returns well.”
That is simply not what everyone expected to happen. Indeed, if Hamburg thought there was a tune to get out of Lasogga he’d likely still be there rather than at Leeds United.
