Manchester City star Bernardo Silva has spoken to the Portuguese press, and talked about the little time he had playing in his home country.
Interviewed by BTV, Benfica’s channel, the former youth player of the club was asked mainly about the Lisbon side.
Bernardo Silva was just a kid when joined Benfica, and spent over ten years at the club, mostly playing for the youth levels and reserve teams.
About having few opportunities to play for the Eagles, Bernardo said: “Of course I’m a little sorry, my dream was to become a Benfica player. Things didn’t happen the way I expected, but I made my way.”
He only made three official appearances for the club and was sold to AS Monaco in 2015 in a €15.75m deal. It was only in France where he really caught Europe’s attention, and after the outstanding 2016/17 season the club had, he was signed by Manchester City.
Bernardo believes he could return to the Portuguese side someday, which of course, is the quote that makes it to newspaper Record’s headline: “Having gone to Monaco was the best decision, then to Manchester City. Some day I may come back. Most of what I learned was at Benfica from seven to 19 years old. Of course I learned a lot!”
“My dream was to be a player at the highest level, to have played for the national team and one of the best clubs. It’s a path that makes me happy.”
Regarding Manchester City, Bernardo Silva said: “A lot has changed. Responsibility is much greater now, to play at Etihad in front of 60,000 spectators, than at Seixal with 500. It’s the pressure to know that we are fighting for some more important titles.”
