It’s not too harsh to say Jordy Clasie hasn’t had the Southampton career he would have hoped for. Linked with a switch to the Premier League for some years, Clasie finally left Feyenoord for Southampton in 2015 and arrived with some expectation.

Never really having the impact expected, Clasie is now on loan at Club Brugge in Belgium. He doesn’t see it as a step backwards, but rather forwards, with the reasoning being that he’ll now get to play more football.

That wasn’t looking possible at Southampton, and Clasie believes that things changed when Ronald Koeman left the club for Everton. Because the midfielder was a specific choice of the Dutch manager, Koeman’s exit marked the beginning of the end.

Clasie also accepts blame himself, knowing he hasn’t taken chances when offered them by those who have followed Koeman.

Speaking to Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad, Clasie explained: “Without him, I might not have even been noticed in England. I have to be grateful he opened the door to England.

“New coaches also bring new players. I did not match the trainer’s story anymore, and I must honestly say that I did not always play as well in the matches I was given.”

Clasie, 26 years of age, now has a chance to get his career back on track at Club Brugge, but still has a Southampton contract until June 2020.
