Around a week ago, Sport Witness covered claims from Austria strongly linking Southampton to Tottenham’s Kevin Wimmer.
It was claimed Southampton had offered €22m for the defender, but Tottenham had knocked the bid back, pending the question as to what Spurs actually wanted.
Since then, in comments which have gone largely unnoticed in England, Wimmer has directly addressed the Southampton claims, and done his best to talk them down.
Austria’s Laola1 quoted the Tottenham player as saying: “The interest from Southampton was not really concrete. I would like to stay in Premier League, because there are other possibilities.”
Those possibilities were named in Austria as Crystal Palace and Stoke City, with Southampton now not taken seriously as a potential destination.
Interestingly, it’s also reported that Tottenham’s asking price for Wimmer has dropped from an initial €23m down to €15m.
Perhaps if Southampton interest wasn’t really concrete previously, it may now become more concrete at the lower, and much more reasonable, asking price.
Over €20m was pushing it for Wimmer, even from Tottenham, and even in the current market.
