Diego Fabbrini celebrated his 27th birthday on Monday, but the Birmingham City owned player has another reason to remember the date.

In one of the Italian’s first training sessions with loan club Oviedo, Fabbrini suffered an injury and tests in Spain have revealed it’s serious.

Spain’s regional El Comercio reports that Fabbrini has ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. That will require surgery and a period of around six months out of the game.

The Spanish medial results came on Tuesday and Fabbrini then got ready to travel to England, where Birmingham City medics will carry out their own assessment of the situation.

Then it will be decided where and how Fabbrini will recover from the injury, with staying at Birmingham City a possibility for the midfielder.

There’s a lot of disappointment in Spain over the situation, but more so there’s sympathy for the player, who, on a day he should have been celebrating his birthday and a new chapter of his career, suffered a terrible stroke of luck.

Get well soon Diego.
