Everton are thrown in with Borussia Dortmund and Marseille in Friday’s edition of L’Equipe, as clubs interested in signing Olivier Giroud from Marseille. The French club have been linked all summer, despite it often being pointed out that Everton and others would have an advanatge.

Giroud ‘is not excited about the idea of a return to France’, according to the French newspaper, but they believe he’s still questioning his Arsenal future.

Marseille, Everton, and Dortmund ‘have to be patient’ and wait, in what would be a difficult and expensive transfer. The best hope of Marseille must be the season starts and Giroud quickly becomes aware he has no chance of featuring much at Arsenal.

Even then, Everton may be a more attractive option, given the player’s desire to dodge a return to Ligue 1.

But it’s quite conceivable that if Giroud swapped Arsenal for Everton he could also end up on the bench. Ronald Koeman, if L’Equipe are correct and there’s still interest, may sign Giroud as a starter, but with the striker options now available at Everton that position wouldn’t be nailed on.

Given Giroud’s character, that fear of a ‘worst case scenario’ is likely to cross his mind.

Therefore, staying at Arsenal may not be such a terrible outcome for the French striker.
