After playing second fiddle to Kasper Schmeichel at Leicester City last season, Ron-Robert Zieler finally had enough of sitting around on the bench and decided to get a move away from the King Power Stadium, choosing to return to Germany.
Bought for just under £3.5m by the German side, Zieler had to push for a move, as Leicester weren’t all that keen on seeing him go, probably due to him being a more than decent backup if Schmeichel injured himself.
He told Kicker: “I had to be very persistent. Even before the holidays, I had to make my desire to leave clear, and hoped that we could do it quickly. Eventually, I had to be present at the start of the training session on the 3rd of July to make my wish clear again.”
The now former Leicester goalkeeper also revealed that while his desire to leave the Foxes didn’t happen ‘overnight’, the player couldn’t just wait to see what happened to Kasper Schmeichel before taking his future into his own hands.
It wasn’t all bad, however, as Zieler explained he ‘developed as a human being’ during his time back in England.
