Hull City owner Acun Ilıcalı has spoken to the Turkish media and been questioned on the reasons he purchased the Championship side.
The Fenerbahce vice-president bought the club in 2022.
Sozcu have covered comments the Hull City president made at a recent business event when asked about his unusual choice to takeover a Championship club.
Ilıcalı explained confidence is important when buying a football club, with the aim to make money having to very much take a back seat.
However, the Turkish businessman believes so far he’s been a success with the English side and has managed to bring in decent money from the sale of players.
“You need to establish the mathematics of owning a football team abroad. In addition, your team is also important. For example, we’ve sold £50m worth of players this year. If you don’t manage it well, you may also be able to get into debt tomorrow. You need to have some self-confidence. You can’t own a football team by saying I want to make money. I make money because I aim to be successful,” said the Hull City owner.
Hull City finished just outside the play-off places in the Championship last season, but have struggled in this campaign. The Yorkshire side currently lie in the relegation zone, five points from safety.
Some Hull City fans will point to departures in the summer as the catalyst for their change in fortunes, after they sold Ozan Tufan to Trabzonspor and Jaden Philogene to Aston Villa.
The Championship side brought in decent transfer fees in the summer from these sales, especially with Philogene, but it seems to have affected the team’s performances in this campaign.
